Sometimes the scene is set close to George's family home at Kirrin Cottage, such as the picturesque Kirrin Island, owned by George and her family in Kirrin Bay. Each time they meet they get caught up in an adventure, often involving criminals or lost treasure. ![]() The vast majority of the stories take place in the children's school holidays. The novels feature the adventures of a group of young children – Julian, Dick, Anne, George and their dog Timmy. The first book, Five on a Treasure Island, was published in 1942. Starting the dive at 65ft feels like doing a wall dive. The highest point of the wreck is the port. The stern of the Stolt Dagali is an impressive wreck sitting in 130ft of water. In the summer of 1965, the ship was named the Stolt Lady. The bow section of the Stolt Dagali was salvaged and refitted with the stern of the CT Gogstad. Poulin starts off the novel by introducing his protagonist with the pseudonym Jack Waterman, who is suffering from writer’s block. In the style of the Beat Generation, Volkswagen Blues is a road novel, mimicking the famous style of Jack Kerouac. The novel was well acclaimed, being nominated for the Governor General's Award for French-language fiction in 1984 and being one of the selected novels in the 2005 edition of Canada Reads.
